Looking to Remove an Unsightly Stump?
Cutting down a small tree is relatively easy, however, digging up the stump and roots is extremely back breaking work. We at David's Tree Service based in Slidell, LA have provided easy steps for homeowners that live outside of our area to remove the stump and roots of a tree.
Instead of digging the rootball out manually, or using harsh chemicals to destroy the root system, try using your common garden garden hose to expose the rootball and main root system. Once the bulk of the main roots is showing, the stump is easily pulled out. However, it does stand to sense, that the more dirt that you remove, the simpler it becomes to simply pull out the remaining stump. Below is the lazy man’s version to remove mounds of dirt.
Make a hole which is approximately 3ft in circumference, 2 ft deep, and around 10ft away from from the actual stump, this generally should be done downhill away from the stump, due to the fact the water will flow easier down than up.
Make a 10 inch wide channel leading straight from the stump to the hole, this will be done by removing any sod or surface vegetation, and thus exposing dirt along the line of your path. This will allow for the mud flow to go into the hole from the stump.
Set your garden hose spray nozzle onto the strongest concentrated stream you have, then use this to grade the mud channel, this enables the mud to flow downhill away from the stump.
When the hole is eventually filled with mud, remove the mud and let the water to drain away to below the depth of the channel. You will see every time you remove the mud from the hole, the hole itself will be wider, so make sure you put the mud away from the hole.
Carry on doing this until you have exposed sufficient rootball, and you are able to move or wiggle it about.
